A variety of public amenities and services exist to ensure our safe and comfortable lifestyles. Many of these services such as law enforcement, fire fighting, roads and parks cannot be provided through the efforts of the private sector alone. To offer such services, a great deal of money is required, and everyone must contribute to this fund. This is commonly known as taxes.
In Japan, taxes are divided into two types: national taxes and local taxes. Local taxes are composed of resident tax, which is made up from municipal resident tax and prefectural resident tax. This funds the work of our local municipal bodies and is collected from citizens depending on their ability to contribute. You could even say that tax is like a membership for a citizen's club and it is this membership fee that allows us to go on living in comfort.
Hamamatsu city is striving to increase awareness and understanding of taxes so that each citizen can actively participate in creating a comfortable and affluent city.
